About the National Space ClubPurpose PurposeThe National Space Club is a non-profit organization devoted to fostering excellence in space activity through interaction between industry and government, and through a continuing program of educational support. Awards are offered to recognize significant achievements in space science and enterprise. Scholarships and other education support are a major focus of Club activity. Since its incorporation, the National Space Club objectives have consistently been to:
Headquartered in Washington, D.C., Club activities are focused on opportunities to bring together the local space community, and those who travel frequently to the Washington area for business reasons. The Club is not intended to be a general purpose space advocacy forum or "grass roots" gathering place. There are many other organizations which may offer activities of this nature, and we have indicated some of them, as well as other space-related sites, on our Space Links page. ActivitiesTo accomplish the objectives set out above, the following programs, events, and activities are sponsored by the Club:
HistoryThe National Space Club (originally organized as the National Rocket Club) was founded on October 4, 1957, as a club to stimulate the exchange of ideas and information about rocketry and astronautics, and to promote the recognition of United States achievements in space. The Club cooperates with, and helps to stimulate, other organizations and individuals to advance the United States space efforts, and addresses itself to the broad historical, educational and business aspects of the missile and space field. OrganizationThe National Space Club is a non-profit corporation composed of representatives of industry, government, educational institutions and private individuals to enhance the exchange of information on astronautics, and through them to relay it to the public at large. The officers, all of whom serve in a voluntary capacity, are drawn from the Corporate Members that form the mainstream of the membership. These officers, and their organizations, are shown on the Current Officers page. An Honorary Board, comprised of leaders from both government and industry, provide guidance and leadership to the Club's activities. An Executive Director serves as the administrative focus for the organization, and provides continuity for the Club's ongoing programs. Membership is also available for individuals who may have a direct interest and involvement in the major activities conducted in the Washington area. Chapters or Regional Committees of the National Space Club have been organized in Cocoa Beach, Florida; Huntsville, Alabama; and Los Angeles, California. Contact information for the chapters may be found on the Space Links and Contact Us pages. |
