National Space Club 54th Annual Goddard Memorial Dinner Awards
The aerospace industry’s premier awards were announced by the National Space Club at the 54th Annual Goddard Memorial Dinner. Awardees are listed below and were recognized by their colleagues from across government, industry and academia at the prestigious dinner, held on Friday, April 1, 2011 at the Hilton Washington. Awards were presented to a number of outstanding individuals for accomplishments in spaceflight, engineering, science, management and education.
- The Dr. Robert H. Goddard Memorial Trophy – Simon Ramo, Ph.D.
For a lifetime of engineering and scientific leadership and achievement that has made an unparalleled impact on our nation's space programs. Among his many accomplishments are many critical early space programs including the Thor, Atlas and Titan rockets, intercontinental ballistic missiles, Project Mercury, Pioneer 1, VIKING 1 and 2, the Lunar Excursion Model Descent Engine and many other programs.
- Astronautics Engineer Award – Jeffrey M. Hanley, Associate Director for Strategic Capabilities, NASA Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center
- Eagle Manned Mission Award – Rita Willcoxon, Director, Launch Vehicle Processing, NASA Kennedy Space Center
- The General Bernard Schriever Award – LTC Patrick J Mullin, 1st Space Brigade, US Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Force Strategic Command
- Goddard Memorial Scholarship – Svetlana Shkoylar, Student, University of North Dakota
- Joseph V. Charyk Award – Colonel Ernesto V. Benavides, USAF Director, Reconnaissance Systems Office
- Nelson P. Jackson Aerospace Award – X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle
- NOAA - David Johnson Award – Lidia Cucurull, Ph.D., NOAA Program Scientist
- Dr. Olin E. Teaque Memorial Scholarship – Lili Sun, Student, River Hill High School
- Press Award – Leonard David, Independent Journalist
- Space Educator Award – Kenneth R. Fiscus Science Teacher, Albert Lea Senior High School
The Goddard Dinner is held each year to celebrate the anniversary of the first successful flight by Dr. Goddard of a liquid-fueled rocket. This black tie event brings together 2,000 members of the government, industry and educational space community.
