Luncheons and Breakfasts
Luncheons and breakfasts are held several times during the year, offering the opportunity for members and invited government guests to mingle and to hear a presentation by a senior government official on a timely topic of interest to the space community. Recent luncheon and breakfast speakers, and information on the next event if it is scheduled, can be found at the Luncheon & Breakfast Events page.
The Goddard Space Flight Center Reception
An annual reception is held at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, usually in October, to honor the achievement of a particular group or program connected to the GSFC. For information on the previous reception, and details about the next one if it has been scheduled, please go to the GSFC Reception page.
The Dr. Robert H. Goddard Memorial Dinner
The Dr. Robert H. Goddard Memorial Dinner is the major event of the Washington space calendar, first celebrated in 1958. Held each year in late March or early April, near the anniversary of the first successful flight by Dr. Goddard of a liquid-fueled rocket, it brings together nearly 2,000 members of the government, industry and educational space community. Information about the next Goddard Memorial Dinner, to be held on March 7, 2008, can be found on the Goddard Dinner page.
Awards are presented to a number of outstanding individuals for accomplishments in spaceflight, engineering, science, management and education. The premier award, the Goddard Trophy, is presented to the individual, group or program deemed to have made the most significant contribution to space activity in the previous year.
Candidates for the Goddard Trophy are nominated by members of the National Space Club Honorary Board, who then vote by secret ballot to select the winner of the trophy. The Goddard Trophy is a half-life-sized bronze bust of Dr. Goddard mounted on a marble base, which the winner is permitted to keep. A listing of the previous recipients is shown on the Goddard Trophy Winners page.
Special Events
From time to time, the National Space Club sponsors special events in connection with major milestones or anniversaries in the space community. Examples include the 20th anniversary of the first moon landing, the 25th anniversary of the founding of NASA, and the public unveiling of the NRO's Corona Program. Any future events of this type will be highlighted on this Events page, with a link to event details.
